The Evolution of Braces: Then & Now

The Evolution of Braces: From the 19th Century to Today

If you had braces before the 21st century, you’ll notice that today’s braces have changed drastically! Braces are now more compact, durable, efficient and discreet than ever before.

Let’s dive into the evolution of braces to see where orthodontics started, compared to where it is now.

Early Braces: The Beginnings

Braces were first introduced in 1819 by French orthodontist, Christophe-Francois Delabarre. As you can imagine, the first braces weren’t exactly aesthetically appealing. These braces were made from a cord composed of animal skin, which was also referred to as ‘catgut’.

During this time, headgear was also commonly used to establish an anchor that would guide the top and bottom jaw bones into alignment. Today, we can do this with rubber bands/elastics attached to a hook on the top and bottom braces.

Before modern advancements, braces featured a cord that was wrapped and winded around each individual tooth. Nowadays, orthodontists attach a bracket to each tooth with a wire spanning through the brackets and elastics (in traditional braces) to hold brackets to wires, moving teeth comfortably and efficiently. This is a much safer, less invasive alternative to wrapping around tooth roots!

20th Century Braces Developments

What did braces look like in the 50s, 70s and 90s? Here, we breakdown the history and evolution of braces over the years:

Braces in the 1950s: A Transitional Eras

The 1950s marked a significant transition in orthodontics, with the gradual introduction of stainless steel as a preferred material. However, it was still not universally accepted, and many orthodontists continued to use other materials, such as gold or silver, which were more expensive and less durable.

The braces of this era were quite different from what we see today. Each tooth had a metal band wrapped around it, a method that was time-consuming and uncomfortable for patients. The adhesive technology that we now take for granted had not yet been developed, so bands were held in place using complex wire mechanisms.

Additionally, the use of x-rays became more common in the 1950s, allowing orthodontists to better diagnose and plan treatment, although this technology was still in its early stages.

Braces in the 1970s: The Advent of Modern Orthodontics

The 1970s brought about significant advancements in orthodontic technology, laying the groundwork for the treatments we recognize today. The most notable development was the shift from the banding of individual teeth to the direct bonding of brackets using newly developed adhesives. This technique allowed for more precise placement of brackets, making treatments more efficient and less invasive.

The 1970s also saw the introduction of self-ligating braces, which used a clip mechanism to hold the archwire in place, eliminating the need for elastic bands. This innovation reduced friction and made the adjustment process smoother for patients.

Another important invention of this decade was lingual braces, which positioned the brackets on the back of the teeth, making them invisible from the front. However, due to the specialized training required, lingual braces were not widely adopted until later years.

Braces in the 1980s & 1990s: Aesthetic and Technological Changes

The 1980s and 1990s were decades of rapid innovation and increased aesthetic consideration in orthodontics. In the early 1980s, clear braces were introduced, offering a more discreet option compared to traditional metal braces. However, metal braces continued to dominate due to their effectiveness and lower cost.

By the 1990s, the use of colored rubber bands with metal braces became a popular trend, especially among younger patients, allowing them to personalize their treatment. The 1990s also saw the revolutionary introduction of Invisalign® clear aligners, which provided a nearly invisible option for straightening teeth without the use of brackets and wires.

These aligners quickly gained popularity for their convenience and cosmetic appeal, marking a significant shift in the orthodontic landscape. From this point on, patients had a variety of treatment options that were not only effective but also tailored to their aesthetic preferences.

Modern Orthodontic Techniques

Through modern-day orthodontic techniques and technologies, we’re able to offer advanced forms of braces that (fortunately) don’t require catgut wrapped around each individual tooth.
We take x-rays (using the advanced iTero® digital scanning device) and high-quality diagnostic photos for every patient, free of charge, in order to create a personalized treatment plan that takes into account every aspect of your smile.

Our highly-experienced orthodontist, Dr. Tripti Pawar, assesses the position of every tooth, as well as the position of your jaw bones, to create a clinically-excellent smile that optimizes not only your appearance, but your bite functionality too.

Providing a personalized patient experience that is both comfortable and modernized is important to us. Choose from modern orthodontic treatmentsmetal bracesclear braces, InBrace® hidden braces, WildSmiles® designer braces and Invisalign clear aligners.

  • Metal braces use high-quality, stainless steel brackets and wires, with colorful rubber bands to guide your teeth into perfect alignment. You’ll get to choose your braces colors each time we change them!
  • Clear braces provide a more discreet treatment option with tooth-colored brackets that blend in with your teeth and won’t be noticeable from a short distance. They’re just as effective as traditional braces too!
  • InBrace braces are attached to the back sides of your teeth, completely hidden from view. These braces use custom Smartwire® advanced computer modeling and AI to move your teeth in a way that’s fast, healthy and totally under the radar.
  • WildSmiles designer brackets come in a variety of shapes (like stars, diamonds, hearts and footballs) and themes (like their Disney collection!)
  • Invisalign treatment allows you to remove your treatment as needed to brush your teeth, floss, eat and drink. You won’t have any dietary restrictions with Invisalign – and they’re virtually invisible, so nobody has to know that you’re in treatment!

Enhanced Patient Experiences and Outcomes with Modern Orthodontic Technology

One of the most impactful innovations in orthodontics is the use of 3D imaging technology. This allows us to create highly detailed digital models of a patient’s teeth and jaw, enabling precise treatment planning from the very beginning. With this level of accuracy, we can predict and visualize the final outcome before treatment even begins, giving patients confidence in the process and the results they can expect.

The introduction of the iTero digital impression system has further enhanced patient comfort by eliminating the need for traditional, messy dental molds. Instead, we use a small, handheld scanner to capture detailed images of the teeth, creating a precise digital model in minutes.

Modern braces and aligners are designed with patient comfort and aesthetics in mind. Today’s braces are smaller, lighter, and more discreet, with options like clear braces and Invisalign providing effective treatment with minimal impact on a patient’s appearance.

Traditional Braces vs. Modern Alternatives

There are two main options available when it comes to correcting your smile. This includes:

Traditional Metal Braces

Made up of metal brackets attached to each tooth and connected by wires, these braces are highly effective for treating a wide range of dental issues, including complex misalignments, severe crowding, and bite irregularities. Traditional braces offer a high level of control, allowing orthodontists to make precise adjustments to each tooth’s position over time.

However, traditional braces are often more noticeable due to their metal construction, which can impact a patient’s self-esteem, especially for adults or teens concerned about their appearance. Traditional braces can also cause discomfort due to the metal wires and brackets, and they require careful maintenance to avoid issues like food getting stuck or the development of plaque around the brackets.

Invisalign

Invisalign represents a significant advancement in orthodontic technology, offering a nearly invisible alternative to traditional braces. Instead of metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses a series of clear, custom-made aligners that fit snugly over the teeth. These aligners are designed to gradually shift teeth into their desired position, making them an ideal option for patients seeking a more discreet treatment.

One of the most notable benefits of Invisalign is its aesthetic appeal. The clear aligners are virtually undetectable, allowing patients to undergo orthodontic treatment without the visible presence of braces. This makes Invisalign particularly popular among adults and professionals who may feel self-conscious about wearing traditional braces.
